Top Movies Released In 1978! Your Thanksgiving free movie list is two movies long, but what movies! Unlike Halloween (that I offered a list of 100 free scary movies here), Thanksgiving uses a different twist. Neither is likely to be specific to Thanksgiving, however they relate to some themes with the holiday. Frankly, I can enjoy these free movies for Thanksgiving or any day of the year.

Big oil company propaganda using a heart! Just the free movie we need for Thanksgiving! This 78-minute semi-documentary from 1948 is one in the most lyrical American films ever produced. In 1994, The Louisiana Story was selected for preservation within the United States National Film Registry through the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant." It is the story of a Cajun boy and his family, living for the bayous in a way of life we can barely imagine.
The boy's family rents land on the oil company, which comes in, drills, and leaves everything the same as it was, clean and unspoiled except that the family includes a little more money. (Yes, it turned out funded with the Standard Oil Company.)
The boy spends most of his time on his narrow boat (pirogue), floating over the bayous, prime snake and alligator habitat, along with his pet raccoon. He never wears your life preserver or shoes... doesn't also have a cell phone to contact case he gets in trouble. There is not much story, just a celebration (such stunning monochrome photography that you could well wonder exactly what the big deal is approximately color) of the way of life that's no longer with us.
All of the actors were amateurs, and for most, it was their only film. As of April 2007, J.C. Boudreaux, who literally boy, was moving into a FEMA trailer along with his wife of fifty-five years, after Hurricane Rita destroyed their house. (source). He had a possibility at fame inside movies, but that he stayed where he was from and apparently knew as a kid an appreciation of family (a marriage of over fifty years) reflects why I consider The Louisiana Story the right free movie first of our most family-friendly holidays.

A black and white silent film that ends having a woman being burned alive? Oh, yes, just what every family needs at Thanksgiving. But, I have three reasons for including The Passion of Joan of Arc with this pair of free movies for Thanksgiving.
First, I am thankful that The Passion of Joan of Arc was ever produced. Second, I am thankful that The Passion of Joan of Arc was preserved. The director Carl Theodor Dreyer (more) died believing that the last copy ended up destroyed. In a little bit of weirdness that sounds a lot more like a movie compared to truth, a practically complete print was discovered in 1981 in a janitor's closet of a Norwegian mental institution.
Finally, I am grateful that individuals can watch this magnificent film, on many lists of the greatest films of them all, free of charge online at Gloria.tv, a Roman Catholic video site.
Maria Falconetti (more), who plays Joan, suffered a psychological breakdown in the making with this film, and he or she never made another film. Pauline Kael (more), a notoriously demanding film critic, said that Falconetti's performance "may function as finest performance ever upon film."
